Abstract

Representation of residential loads in both academia and industry is mainly limited to static load models without the consideration of the startup behavior where a high level of inrush current can be observed. In normal grid operation, it can be assumed that inrush currents of different appliances occur in distribution to time while during a black start event, all inrush currents get aggregated, pushing an inverter-dominated microgrid to its current limits and consequently nominating a second blackout. Based on current measurements, this paper presents a component-level load modeling approach applied to 27 typical household appliances. An aggregation of these load models is then used in a proposed loading sequence that effectively suppresses the transient load current at the time of a black start.
