Abstract
Increasing the wear resistance of hot forging dies is a promising way of improving the efficiency of hot forging processes. PVD-treatment with titanium-based hard coatings is a method well-suited for increasing the wear resistance of highly loaded surfaces. In comparison to existing titanium-based CVD-treatments, PVD-treatments provide the application of multilayer coatings with many thin single-layers. In this paper, different coating systems have been benchmarked regarding their applicability in the hot forging industry. First, the general layer quality was analyzed followed by serial forging tests with simultaneous wear analysis in order to determine the influence of different coating systems combined with different nitriding treatments on wear behavior. The tests revealed that occurring loads, which are mainly determined by the die geometry, requires a variation of treatment parameters. The variation of nitriding as well as coating treatments showed strong influence on the wear behavior in different areas of the investigated hot forging dies.
