Abstract
Cylinder Liner for internal combustion engines with a fine-honed surface combined with micro-dimples are presented for friction reduction. The micro-dimples are produced by an innovative machining process which allows the manufacturing of customized micro patterns on rotational symmetrical parts. The testing of the cylinder liner was carried out on a heavy-duty single cylinder research engine under fired conditions. In order to determine the frictional losses the "indication method" was used. Oil emissions are measured using a mass spectrometer. Compared with an ordinary plateau honed surface, cylinder liner equipped with micro-dimples show significantly less frictional losses und reduced oil emission.
