Abstract

This insight paper revisits Advanced Frugal Innovations (AFI) as a path towards a sustainability-oriented economic transformation. Its focus is on the disruptive nature of combining AFI with advances in biotechnology and their potential to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Interfaces between the two domains are derived and shown. Examples highlight the potential contribution of products and processes based on this combination towards generating sustainable high-performance products. Challenges regarding generation, scaling, diffusion and integration of AFI in entrepreneurial strategies as well as future research needs are acknowledged and discussed. Despite the technological and strategic challenges associated with the combination of biotechnology and AFI, significant benefits are apparent for the integration of this combination into business strategies and social development.
