Logistic decoupling as a measure for increasing delivery performance of a multi-variant series production

Abstract

One of the fundamental factors for the sustainable success of a production enterprise is a strong logistic performance. Despite the vital significance of the logistic performance, many enterprises have difficulties fully exploiting their logistic potential. To overcome this deficit, enterprises need resilient models and methods that support them in achieving their logistic goals. For this purpose, the logistic decoupling of value adding stages will be introduced in this paper as a measure for specifically increasing the due date reliability. The procedure presented here takes into consideration the central problems that need to be dealt with in designing this measure, including: the selection of products to be decoupled, the factors influencing the decision about the decoupling point as well as the procedure for estimating the expected impact on the schedule. Some of these problems can be resolved based on models, others heuristically. The procedure described here has been developed and applied within an industry based project.
