Abstract

In design education, a particularly heterogeneous student body leads to individual learning needs. Intelligent tutorial systems can be used as a digital support tool to equalize students’ levels of knowledge. These are able to carry out digital one-to-one teaching by training individual content and closing knowledge deficits in a targeted manner. This thesis describes an intelligent tutorial system for use in design education. The requirements for the system are specified based on the success factors of existing systems and taking into
account the application context of design. By combining the characteristics of knowledge-based systems and intelligent tutorial systems, a model is developed that can be used to represent one-to-one teaching in design education. For the technical implementation of this model, a development environment is synthesized, which represents the individual components of the model as well as the communication structure. The usability of the model and the development environment is demonstrated by implementing the application example of a CAD gearbox shaft. The validation and verification of the intelligent tutorial system is carried out by evaluating it in a teaching environment. The
results show that the system is technically capable of providing individual instruction in design education and can guide students to valid design solutions.
