Abstract
In the past the focus was on composting as the sole disposal option in the case of biopolymers. However, this is not necessarily the most sustainable option. Burning biopolymers gives rise to the same amount of CO2 as biodegradation. Burning, however, generates an additional benefit in the form of energy. In this context, investigations into the fuel value of biopolymers and the composition of combustion gases were conducted The results obtained for the biopolymer materials studied, the latter can be said to be suited without exception to thermal use. The composition of the combustion gases is determined by the element composition and monomers or oligomers resulting from chain scission, as dependent on burning conditions.
